Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA)
The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is a five-member board. Each member is a resident of Bedford and is appointed to a 5-year term. The Zoning Board of Appeals meets typically on the first Wednesday of every month, or as set by the Board.
The Zoning Board of Appeals is a quasi-judicial board that allows residents to appeal negative decisions made by the Planning Board, Building Inspector or Town Board, regarding a project they would like to do on their property. The ZBA also grants Special Use Permits for uses such as private clubs, private schools and churches and may issue variances granting relief from various Town codes.
A public hearing is scheduled to hear the application with regard to what it is an applicant wants to do on their property and are being told that the Town Code does not permit it. The majority of our applications are for area variances which means a project does not fall within the legal set back from either the front or side property line.
Applications and information regarding appeals or variances can be picked up and submitted at the Building Inspector’s Office. Applications are accepted from 8:30-4 daily.
