Supervisor’s Agenda for 2021

As we mark the New Year with optimism for healthier, more hopeful months ahead, I am mindful of both the remarkable accomplishments achieved in 2020 despite a global pandemic and the steep challenges that remain before us. I salute my predecessor, Chris Burdick, and my partners on the Town Board for their drive and creativity in meeting the demands through turbulent times. In this time of transition, I look forward to positive collaboration.

You may see a bit of a different style from me, but you can expect the same level of commitment to serving the community. Given all that we’ve experienced and learned from 2020, my priorities are as follows:

Protecting the wellbeing of our residents as first priority
We’re still in the midst of a global pandemic, and I will continue to work very closely with the Westchester County Department of Health to assure compliance with guidelines promulgated by the state of New York to ensure public safety.

Assuring fiduciary fitness of the Town 
Financial security must be sustained while continuing to provide excellent services to the community. Working with our superb department heads, as well as the Comptroller and Bond Counsel to the Town of Bedford, I will collaborate with my fellow Board members to optimize budget efficacy.

Guiding major projects through next phases toward completion 
Phase I of the Town’s sewer project is already under construction to bring greater vitality to the Bedford Hills and Katonah hamlets. I’ll be working closely with NYC and DOCCS officials to prepare for Phase II, which breaks ground after 2021. Similarly, I’ll continue to be energetically engaged in the renovation of the Bedford Hills Community House, which is anticipated to be done this summer.

Ramping up environmental initiatives
Robust action as responsible stewards is necessary to combat climate change and to preserve the lands we inhabit. To that end, the Town Board and I will be working closely with Bedford2030 to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2030. In addition, we will continue to preserve Bedford’s history, character, and open spaces. I’m particularly excited about providing greater access to newly-acquired Buxton Gorge trails within Bedford Hills by developing a parking area and entry point. Gratefully, we also benefit from the expertise of folks on the advisory committees at the Katonah Historic District Advisory Commission, the Bedford Village Historic District Review Commission, the Town’s Historic Building Preservation Commission and the Bedford Hills Historical Museum.

Upholding our commitment to affordable homes
I remain personally committed to supporting the needs of those who face food and housing insecurity — which have been especially exacerbated by the pandemic. Through our continued partnership with the County and with Bedford’s Blue Mountain Housing Corp, I will be pursuing projects to address these needs.

Building a stronger community through inclusion
Because we all know that unity is strength, I am dedicated to coordinating efforts through community partnerships to assure equitable opportunity for all. The initiatives of newly established committees deserve our support.
