Update on Establishment of Buxton Gorge Preserve

The process is moving well regarding the acquisition of Buxton Gorge and establishing the 56 acre Buxton Gorge Preserve utilizing Open Space Funds. As I reported on November 22, the Town Board at its November 19 meeting approved a Contract of Sale between under which Lakeover Development, as seller, and the Town of Bedford, as purchaser.

The Town’s Planning Board, as lead agency under the State Environmental Quality Review Act, late last month sent out its notice to serve as lead agency and is reviewing the application which Lakeover submitted to subdivide its 80 undeveloped acres off of Bedford Center Road/Buxton Road into four parcel; one comprised of the 56 acres to be sold to the Town and three single family building lots to be retained by the Seller.

The Board will hold a public hearing in early January on the application.  I remain hopeful that the purchase of the parcel may be closed by mid-January 2020.


Following the acquisition of the 56 acres, the Town intends to develop hiking trails.  Earlier this month the Town Board adopted two bond resolutions, one to cover the acquisition and closing costs for the purchase of the 56 acre parcel and the second in the amount of $175,000 for development of trails.

We are also discussing the possibility of a partnership with Westchester Land Trust for a role in stewardship.
