1. How do I submit applications?

Permit applications along with payment (checks payable to the Town of Bedford) should be mailed to or dropped off at the Building Department. At this time we are not accepting permits or payments via email.

2. Can I submit applications off-hours?

When the office is closed, you may leave applications in the metal mailbox outside the front glass doors of the building. Please do not email applications.

3. How do I schedule a building inspection?

4. When is an electrical permit required?

An electrical permit is required for any/all electrical work and must be worked on by a Westchester county-licensed electrician.

5. How long does it take to get a building permit?

Permits are generally processed in the order they are received, so submitting as soon as you are ready is advised.

Turnaround time is informed by the type of permit submitted, work schedules, volume of applications and may range from two weeks to a few months.  In general, smaller permits are generally in a matter of weeks, big permits are generally in a matter of months. 

6. How can I check the status of my permit application?

You should call the Building Department after a reasonable amount of time for any updates.

7. How do I determine my setbacks?

To determine your setbacks, you must determine your zoning district on the map.

8. May I access copies of plans or records the Building Department has on file?

You may access by submitting a FOIL REQUEST.

9. How many bedrooms can I have?

The number of bedrooms permissible is based on septic size.  That information is maintained at the Department of Health in Mount Kisco. Contact: 914-864-7330. 25 Moore Avenue, Mt. Kisco.

10. How do I know if my property is in Wetlands?

Refer to the tax parcel viewer, enter your address and click “Search,” click on “More Data,” click on “NY Regulated Wetlands,” and determine if the property outlined in yellow intersects with the Wetlands colored in green.

11. What are the NYS and Town building requirements?

12. What do I need a permit for?

You likely need a permit for almost every action you could take on your property, including accessory buildings like sheds of any size, as well as generators, and trees. Please refer to our comprehensive list of Building Department-related permits to confirm your need for one or multiple permits. Please note that depending on the project, permits from other boards may be required.

13. Are there any home improvements that do not require a permit?

Yes, some examples include: changing replacement windows, redoing the siding without changing structural components, changing roof shingles, swapping kitchen cabinets, etc.

Please note: these projects may require a permit for any electrical/plumbing work.

1. Where can I park for a day?

Daily parking for the general public is available at the numbered spaces in Lot #3 (50 Wood Bridge Road) in Katonah and in Lots #7 or #8 (Railroad Avenue) in Bedford Hills.

In addition, daily parking is also available in the numbered spaces after 10:00 a.m. in Lot #1 in Katonah (Jay Street) and in Lot #4 (Railroad Avenue) in Bedford Hills.

Residents of the Town of Bedford, with proof of residency (valid vehicle registration), can park in Lot #1 in Katonah or Lot #8 in Bedford Hills, if they obtain a daily parking permit at the Town’s Parking office located at 425 Cherry Street, Bedford Hills; the Parking Office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The current daily parking fee is $10 for a calendar day. Parking is free on the weekends starting at 6:00 p.m. on Fridays until 11:59 p.m. on Sundays.  

2. Where can I park overnight?

Annual Parking Permit holders can park overnight in their assigned parking lot.  

If you do not have an Annual Parking Permit, overnight parking is allowed weekdays, (Monday 12:00 a.m. to Friday 6:00 p.m.) in Lot #3 in Katonah.  The daily parking fee is $10 per calendar day.

If you are a daily parking customer and plan to leave your car parked in a metered space overnight in Lot #3, you will have to pay for two (2) days even if you plan on returning within 24 hours from the time you parked in the lot.

You can park in a metered space in Lot #3 in Katonah, Lot #7 and Lot #8 in Bedford Hills, for a maximum of five (5) days; weekend parking is free and does not count towards the five (5) maximum.

3. How do I purchase a daily permit?

Residents can purchase daily parking permits in the Town’s Parking Office, located on the second floor at 425 Cherry Street, Bedford Hills.  The current cost of a daily parking permit is $10 and can only be used in Lot #1 in Katonah and Lot #8 in Bedford Hills.  Residents can purchase up to 10 daily parking permits a month and must date the paper permit in order to validate it for the day when used.  Failing to date the parking permit will result in getting a parking summons.  

In Lots #1, #3, #4, #7 and #8 the Town also offers the option of paying for parking using a muni pay station. The pay stations only accept credit cards (Visa or MasterCard).  

 

 

 

 

 

4. Where can I park for multiple days?

As is the case for overnight parking, Annual Permit holders do not have a limit on the number of consecutive days allowed to park in their assigned parking lot.

If you are a daily parking customer and plan to leave your car parked in a metered space overnight in Lot #3, you are required to pay for two (2) days even if you plan on returning within 24 hours from the time you parked in the lot.

5. How do I apply for an annual parking permit?

Annual Parking Permits for the commuter lots can be obtained through the Parking Portal on the Town’s website or using this link: https://bedfordonline.parkvantage.com/login

First time permit applicants must enroll through the portal before they can complete the permit application.

Once the enrollment has been completed, the Parking Portal will send an email that instructs you to log-into the portal to complete your personal information and submit required documentation in order for the staff in the parking office to approve you permit.  

Debit/Credit Card payments are accepted through the portal and will expedite the approval and issuance of the permit.   Customers that opt to mail in a check to the parking will have their permits approved once the check is received and processed by the staff.  

6. Which lots have availability?

The Town has 3 lots that serve the Katonah Train Station; identified as Lot #1 on Jay Street, Lot #2 on Katonah Avenue and Lot #3 on Wood Bridge Road.  Currently, all three lots service the Katonah Train Station have available spaces for annual permit holders.  

The lots serving the Bedford Hills Train Station are as follows:  Lot #4, Lot #7, Lot #8 and Lot RR, all located off of Railroad Avenue.  Lot #5 is located on Adams Street, just north of the Bedford Hills Post Office.  Currently, Lot #4 has no available permits and the Town has instituted a wait list for Town residents; the person at the top of the list dates to April 22, 2019.  The rest of the parking lots serving the Bedford Hills Station have available spaces for annual permit holders.

 

7. How do I add or change a vehicle on my parking permit?

To add, change/update or remove vehicle information already on file in the parking portal, please log onto your ParkVantage account and go to Vehicle Change Request.  Once you have accessed your account, you can upload the new registration if adding a vehicle, or remove a vehicle from your permit.  Photos of the vehicle license plate or windshield registration stickers are not accepted.  The parking office staff will review the request and either approve or request further information.  

Customers adding a vehicle to their account may contact the parking office via phone (914)666-8097 or email parking@bedfordny.gov to request approval of the new vehicle into the account.  

8. Why did I receive a parking ticket? How do I dispute it?

Tickets may be issued for lack of a parking permit or for vehicles that are not listed on your permit.  Please check your parking permit account to ensure that all vehicles are listed correctly.  If you choose to dispute a parking ticket, please contact the Town Justice Court by calling (914) 666-6965.

9. Can I change my lot?

If you would like to change your Parking Lot designation, please contact the Parking office (914) 666-8097 to inquire about lot availability.  Please keep in mind we have wait lists for our prime lots.

 

10. What time can I park for free?

You can park for free in Lot #2 located at 190 Katonah Avenue, two blocks south of station, at no charge after 12:00 noon Monday through Friday.  You must park only in the designated “Permit Parking Only” areas.  Free parking expires at midnight.

Parking is free in all the commuter lots on weekends to everyone starting on Friday at 6:00 p.m. until Sunday 11:59 p.m. and on the following holidays:  New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, July Fourth, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

11. Can I add days onto my daily parking permit?

Currently, the option of adding day(s) to you daily parking permit is not available.

1. How can I find out about the programs?

The recreation department publicizes their programs in seasonal brochures, which are posted on the town's website on the Recreation page. To get up-to-date information, sign up for the town's email alert.

2. Can I register for recreation programs by phone?

Registration by phone is not permitted. You may register by going to the Recreation and Parks Department Office, online or by mail. Mail-in registrations must include a completed and signed registration form and a check for the total amount due.

3. Who do I make my check payable to?

Checks for recreation programs should be made payable to the "Town of Bedford."

4. Can I pay for recreation programs with a credit card?

Yes, The town of Bedford accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. We do not accept credit cards over the phone. (Please note: there may be a processing fee associated with credit card transactions.)

5. Can I get a refund?

Those looking for a refund before the program date should contact the Recreation office to obtain a Refund Request form. All forms must be completed and will be reviewed individually and will, if granted, be prorated and subject to an administrative processing fee. (Camp refunds are subject to different policies.) Refunds will also be given when a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. The participant assumes the risk of all changes in personal and business affairs.

6. How can I check if a program has been cancelled?

If you have registered for a program with us and provided an email address, every attempt will be made to email you if a program is cancelled for any reason. You may also call our recreation hotline number at 914-864-3777 or the office during business hours at 914-666-7004.

7. What is the town Email Alert and how do I sign up?

The Town has created an alert system to update residents about events, town meetings and pertinent information that might be of interest to the residents. To sign up, view the Email Alerts website which may be found at the top of the home page under EServices.

1. What causes my tax bill to change?

Tax bills change for various reasons including, but not limited to: addition or removal of any tax exemptions; increased budgets are adopted; revenue from outside sources beyond property tax shrinks; the taxable assessment value of the assessing unit changes; or the tax levy is apportioned differently.

2. What if the due date for my taxes falls on a weekend or a holiday?

If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a public holiday, payments may be made on the following business day without additional charge.

3. I didn’t receive a tax bill or received it late, do I still have to pay the penalty?

Yes, regardless, property owners are not exempt from paying taxes due to a lack of a bill. There is no authorization in Real Property Tax Law to waive penalties or interest.

4. Can a penalty be waived?

No, neither the Receiver of Taxes nor any other official have legal authority to waive statutory penalty charges. These are fixed by the Real Property Tax Law and Westchester County Tax Law.

5. Do you accept postmarked envelopes on the last day of a penalty free tax period as my payment will arrive in the tax office after its due date?

Yes, providing it is a timely, valid United States Post Office Postmark. No other postmarks will be accepted such as private/office meters and foreign postmarks, etc.

6. I no longer have an escrow account or I have satisfied my mortgage. How can I receive my tax bills moving forward?

A request must be made in writing and can be mailed to Receiver of Taxes, 321 Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, NY 10507. Alternatively, you could come into Town Hall and fill out the form in person at the same address. The Tax Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.
