Belonging in Bedford
Bedford, a community of rich history and diverse heritage, proudly opens its arms to residents and visitors alike. In recent times, our town has recognized the pressing need to embrace and codify the values of equity and inclusion. We are firmly committed to fostering an environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and included, irrespective of their background. In other words, we want all of the residents and visitors to feel that they belong in Bedford.
What does this mean?
We acknowledge the historical and systemic harms that have adversely impacted certain groups within our community. It is our unwavering resolve to rectify any injustices or systemic barriers within our reach and to build a more inclusive and equitable town for all. We understand that the strength and vibrancy of Bedford are rooted in the diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds of our residents, and we are dedicated to ensuring that everyone enjoys the highest quality of life and equal access to the services, opportunities, and resources that our town offers.
Diversity in Bedford
We also acknowledge a diverse array of cohorts in our community, including African-American/Black, individuals with different abilities, Hispanic/Latino, LGBTQ, those with religious, ethnic, and cultural identifiers, seniors, veterans, and women who are incarcerated. Our commitment to serving these cohorts stems from the belief that every resident deserves a fair and equitable experience in our town. Our commitment to equity and inclusion (belonging) extends across the broad spectrum of municipal practices, including but not limited to education, employment, housing, social services, public safety, and community engagement.
Commitment Against Hate & Discrimination
Finally, we hold a steadfast stance against hate, terrorism, racism, violence, antisemitism, assault, ageism, and any form of discrimination or oppression. We are determined to ensure that these destructive forces find no place within our community.
